You want to get paid in cigars?” When Steve Zengel, president of the Shore Conference Basketball Coaches Association, approached the legendary Princeton basketball coach Pete Carril about speaking at an upcoming event, he could hardly believe the response. At the time, Zengel had been coaching basketball for several years and was often on call when Princeton needed a coach for their summer camp. When Zengel decided to run a clinic for the coaches in the association, he asked Carril to speak. The legendary Princeton coach said yes, but, refused to accept cash as payment. Zengel wanted to do something, and so, after pressing the matter, Carril finally said, “If you have to do something, get me five cigars.”
